My name is Carrie, and mine are the hands behindThe Humble Knot.
I cannot recall a time in my life when I haven’t expressed my creativity. It is very much who I am. I started drawing as a youngster, and throughout the years, my interests have included photography, playing piano, making garden art from repurposed materials, interior design, and basically anything that provided a creative challenge and an outlet for self-expression.
So what brought me to fibre art? Like so many people in recent years, I was finding life in this world can be unsettling and stressful. When I am creating, I am in my happy place, so learning a new creative skill seemed like the perfect medicine. I don't remember why I thought of trying macrame, but I am so glad I did because it was the beginning of a journey that has allowed me to experiment with all things fibre.
In the time since learning macrame, my interests and creativity have continued to expand. I now create wall hangings using macra-weaving (a combination of macrame and weaving), a table-top loom, and, most recently, coiled basket weaving techniques. I also greatly enjoy when I get an opportunity to include upcycled and repurposed objects in my work. Each artform has its own way of adding wonderful texture and dimension to projects. Focusing on the task at hand has a calming effect and allows me to feel more positive. I particularly like that there is no right or wrong way to make my pieces, and I can just go where my imagination takes me.
I don’t have a specific style. I just try to ensure that each piece is unique and has a sense of thoughtfulness and beauty...and to think it all began with a simple knot.
